Global Juice Feast

Hey everyone, I noticed that raw foods recipes are dime a dozen on the net, but juice recipes, especially juice feasting recipes are pretty rare. So I thought it would help of we started a thread of combos/recipes to use for the feast.

My favorite so far is Celery/Spinach/Parsley/Cucumber/Pear. This combo is particularly cleansing and helps if your GIT is a little backed up since pear juice is a mild laxative. It's also delish! The spinach and one whole cucumber make up the bulk in my mix, and one pear is enough to add a nice sweet flavor. Then 3 sticks of organic celery (I use leaves, bases and all) and 4 sprigs of parsley for the rest.

Post up everyone. Cheers!

Shari & Berry Blue Toes --- continuing this thread. You can find bitter melon in Asian grocery stores. Berry Blue Toes described it well. It does look exactly like a bumpy light-skinned cucumber. It's definitely not sweet. It is pretty bitter.

They are bitter and used in asian dishes. In 2004 when I was 294 lbs and I found out my twin sister was diagnosed with diabetes I started on a raw vegetable diet and started juicing more.I had no signs of diabetes. I was reading a juicing book and found bitter melon. It said bitter belon was a natural replacement for insulin used for diabetes. I had been eating at a friends Chinese restuarant for about two years and had been eating bitter melon about three times a week. So I started Juicing a bitter melon and apple (to off set the bitter taste every day. I had to drive 60 miles to Jacksonville or Savannah to buy them at the Asian stores. So I would usually buy 10 or 20 of them. I got strange looks, an old white man buying bitter melon, but when I told them what I was doing they agreed but questioned me juicing it raw because of the bitterness..

Thanks everyone for this post. I wanted to bring this to the top now that we're getting close to the 3/7 date. I'm ready to go and will rely on everyone's recipes for variety. Still trying to get used to green juice in the morning. My favorite so far: Grape&Green - kale (4 or so leaves), 2 big handfuls of spinach, celery (2 or 3 stalks), and grapefruit (1).

Okay, I've been reading and looking and looking some more. What constitutes a green juice? Or maybe I should ask what percentage should be greens to make it officially green? I ask because I always add something green to my juices.

One of my favorites is oranges and romaine. I use an entire head of romaine to 12 - 15 oranges. Sometimes I throw in a celery stalk, but it usually ends up tasting like celery then! So is this considered a green juice? Or would I need to cut down on the oranges?

Thanks, Shari

I'm really partial to my liquid pineapple green salsa!

tomatoes
cucumber
celery
swiss chard
spring onion
garlic
jalepeno peppers (and/or habenaro, serrano, etc.)
pineapple
cilantro
lime

I drink this every day...in abundance! :-) Sometimes I modify the greens a bit -- like today I had some dandelion greens on hand, so I threw them in, too!

My routine has been (though this is day 1 of nothing but juice, for me):

Quart #1
1 head romaine lettuce
1 green pepper
1 cucumber or 4 pickling cucumbers

Quart #2
1 chunk of ginger
1 head celery
1 apple
1/4 green cabbage
1/8th to 1/4 teaspoon cayenne

Quart #3
1 bunch spinach
1 bunch kale
1 apple

I'm at a loss for what different greens I can use. I don't think that I want to have both an entire head of celery and an entire bunch of chard in the same day, because they are both salty.

I guess I will try:

1lb. of salad mix (arugala etc.)
1 bunch collard greens without the stems (with the stems it sometimes tastes like rancid peanuts or something)

Sorry to post twice in a row, but I hope no one minds if I have more questions.

I juiced blue berries mixed with young coconut water (just the liquid, no flesh), which is tasty. But, after letting it sit for a minute it no longer pours out of the jar. It's like gelatin! So, maybe I shouldn't have that while feast/fasting?

Along those lines, I have a quarter of a Mexican papaya sitting in my refrigerator. I imagine it would also be gooey, but I've never tried to juice a papaya. I'll have to go look for the rationale for avoiding fiber.

The blueberries are loaded with pectin. That is why it is now a solid. More water will take care of the problem.

I read somewhere that combining fruit juice and vegetable juice isn't a good idea because it takes different types of stomach acids to digest fruit and veg. So I usually try to avoid mixing the two. Is this true?

Leafy greens actually combine very well with fruits. I have a long history of irritable bowel syndrome and a very compromised digestive system and I have experience only good results. Root vegetables like carrots and beets are a great combination with most fruits. Melons are generally best consumed alone as they digest and assimilate so quickly. Hope this helps!

I agree with what Penni said. Victoria Boutenko says that greens will go with whatever you like. I especially like cantelope and spinach. Tastes like a vanilla shake to me!

This morning I had a head of leaf lettuce and a honeydew melon. Very tasty, but could have probably juiced two head of lettuce to go with it. Turned out very sweet.

I'm off to move snow off my garden patch where the sweet peas grow! It's the full moon tonight and I need to get them in the ground today!
