Global Juice Feast

Hi Juice Feasting Community,

Sorry for the pause in our answering questions here.... our pregnancy is progressing (Katrina is feeling great!), and lately we have been all consumed with preparation and family!

We are here and in The Green Room (for JuiceFeasting.com members) answering questions from now until the end of the 92-Day 2009 Global Juice Feast, beginning the first Saturday in March, 2009.

So that is it! Just a short note to let you know... let the quest(ions) continue!

With peaceful steps,

David and Katrina Rainoshek

Thanks, David and Katrina! I'm doing the juice feast for the first time this March, so it's good to see you're here beforehand - nice to meet you!
And good luck with the whole baby thing - it'll be a blast!

Hi,
Congrats! A question: I'm on my first day and have experience with juicing but never in these quanities. This morning I juiced a head of celery, two cucumbers, a large beet with it's greens, 4 radishes with it's greens, 2 bunches of collard greens, and an apple. I use an omega juicer that I'm happy with. This took some time to do and I just came up with 2 quarts. I imagine if I diluted it with 2 more quarts of water it would not be high enough in nutrition? I want to stay away from too much fruit for now. Your thoughts, ideas?
Thank You,
Laurie

Laurie.........it takes alot to make juice. I did a bunch of juicing this weekend and put it in the freezer to use during the week. I am also making fresh juice during the week, but it's nice to only need to make a little each day as opposed to alot. It did take me quite a while to make my 10 quarts of juice. I juice celery, parsley, carrots, broccoli, lacinato kale, cucumbers, zucchini, granny smith apples.....and also have some citrus juices (currently lots of 1/2 orange and have grapefruit juice....and straight carrot....and carrot apple....you will need to be prepared.....and you will need at least 3 quarts of juice each day if not the recommended 4. Some people also use the water from young coconuts (a good coconut gives about 2 cups of water)....best of luck to you.

My basic green juice recipe is a bunch of parsley, a head of celery, a bunch of kale, lots of carrots and at least 4 granny smith apples....enough to make 2 quarts of juice...I do 1 quart of straight greens with a bit of carrot and a second quart of apples and carrots, and mix the two...for a very yummy and satisfying juice. I love the parsley.....I have to have it in all of my green juices......

Yes, it takes a lot of produce to make your juice. The more you dilute it with water, the less nutrients are there, and this is Juice Feasting, so you want almost 100% straight juice. Add some carrots in there - less expensive, but chock full of phytonutrients and calories. You might also try making your juice in the Vitamix or Blendtec - it will burst open more cell walls in your produce, enabling you to squeeze out more juice.

For reference, it takes around 12-15 lbs of produce to make 4 quarts of juice! You are worth it!

Thanks David,
I did not realize that my Vitamix might make more juice than the Omega (I like them both). My top health issues are psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. The fingers are especially painful in the morning. So squeezing those bags will probably have to wait awhile; but something to look forward to!

What wonderful news that you are having a baby...and that Katrina is feeling great! Do let us know when the baby is due, and thank you so much for all of this....it's so wonderful to have all of this support.

I have a question...which is what do you think about making juice for the week and freezing it? And having some thawed frozen juice and some fresh juice each day? I am doing this....it's only been 3 days...it seems to work fine...just wondering what your thoughts are on this. I plan on doing a long juice feast (112 days)

Also doing some straight carrot juice and for my money, it's awesome. My skin was feeling very dry, now it feels wonderful.

Thanks and much love

Alessandra,

Thanks for the reply. I'll be adding some of your juice suggestions. It's great to have this kind of support. I'm also interested in what David and Katrina think about frozen juice. I want to stay on the juice feast as long as it takes (and is still healthy) to heal my psoriasis and psoriatic arthritic. I've given up on my rheumatologists nasty meds. Removing gluten from my diet helped me to do that. I was, however, falling into regular use of Aleve. In the three days I've been juicing I have not needed it! I still have some pain and discomfort in my joints, but three days and already improvement.
Holy cow! Or better, holy GREENS!

Look forward to taking this journey with you,
Laurie

Hi Alessandra,

You *can* do this (but I don't suggest it at all), but you will lose 30-50% of many of your phytonutrients, and probably 90-100% in some cases, by freezing already made juice. Remember that your juice trends down in nutritional value every minute after making it - and it takes hours to freeze a juice, and hours to thaw. Not to mention the effect of freezing temperatures on your nutrient values.

Blessings on your Juice Feast. We are looking forward to reading about your progress! Congratulations on your healthy, happy skin!

And thank you for the congratulations on our growing baby - he or she is due June 21 - Summer Solstice!

With peaceful steps,
