Botany and Extraction
Lemons grow on 15 foot high trees that produce fruit and white blossoms year-round. Sensitive to cold temperatures and high humidity, Lemon trees thrive in the arid, subtropical climates of southern California and the Mediterranean region, where they grow in large, fragrant orchards.
The high temperatures needed for steam distillation would destroy the subtle, fresh aroma of lemon oil, which is best preserved by cold-pressing the fresh peel. Cold-pressing will yield six to seven pounds of oil from one ton of fresh fruit.
Additional Ways to Use
CAUTION: Citrus oils should NOT be applied to skin that will be exposed to direct sunlight or ultraviolet light within 12 hours. The reason for this is because it strengthens the effects of sunlight.
